Diverter Flashing – A Crucial Layer of Roof Protection we See Missing or Wrong all the Time

Diverter flashing (also called kickout flashing) is a special type of flashing that diverts rainwater away from the cladding and into the gutter and is crucial to water protection in a roof system and yet we see it installed incorrectly or not at all in so many homes that we roof. 

Without kick-out flashing and proper gutter placement, water flowing off the roof can run down the siding causing major damage over time.

Sometimes we will see new builds where extra caulking has been applied in a lame effort to divert water, while sometimes there is metal flashing (as required in building code), but it is not large enough to properly direct the water into the gutters.

The resulting damage from the overflow can be unbelievable causing rot, mold and complete degradation of walls. That is why it is our mission to always do this type of often overlooked flashing properly the first time as well as all the other flashing necessary in a roof installation.

Flashing and Your Roof
Flashing in general is usually made out of metal (but may contain other materials as well) and is part of a complete system that will be found in many areas of your home’s roof.  These include places like roofing corners and valleys, or around objects that jut out through your roof like pipes or a chimney for example.
 
Flashing maximizes the durability and effectiveness of your roof and it also is an attractive complement to the exterior of a home when installed by a professional.

One of the most common types of metal flashing material used is aluminum because it is usually the most cost-effective, durable, and weather-resistant.

Bottom Line:  Flashing is an extremely important consideration in the roofing process.  It is placed in many areas of a roof, however some types are not installed as they should be or at all as in the case of diverter flashing.  The result?, you will not have the excellent protection you need against the penetration of water behind the exterior walls.
