![]() I’ve done roofing a long time now and I always find it interesting when someone thinks that just anybody can climb up there and take off the old shingles and put on some new ones. Easy right? Well, perhaps not so fast. There IS a reason that roofing is a profession! Professionals not only know how to approach and work on a roof safely but they are trained in getting around all of those roofing obstacles that many of us have on our roof. Obstacles you say? Yes…think about those vents, skylights, chimneys, solar panels and all the things in between that interrupt the flow of the roof that is to be laid. These have to be dealt with properly because extra attention is needed in areas where moisture could come in. Vents are a necessary part of any house. They allow air in and to circulate around your house all while not allowing rain or snow to enter. There is even a vent on the roof for the sewage line that takes the old used water out of the house. It is on the roof to allow all the pipes the gift of gravity as there is no greater vertical drop on a house than one that comes from the roof. Whether you have a working fireplace or not, you may have a chimney. They are obviously needed if you do have a fireplace, but some choose to let the chimney remain after the original fireplace gone for the nice look it can give to a house. Skylights are another popular obstacle on the roof because people love natural light! They are a great addition to any home but again, if they are not properly sealed from the roof they will do more harm than good. Another thing I am starting to see a lot of these days is solar panels. Good for you, you want to get environmentally friendly, but, did you know this is another roof obstacle that must be handled with the utmost of care when re-roofing? A final thought is that any roofing obstacle will need to have pros expertly install flashing around it to work with your shingles to get that watertight fit. At Class Eh! Roofing, we have done every job…large or small and that includes ones that have required lots of extra attention to detail so that these “obstacles” that make your home what it is on the roof, are properly taken care of and you can have many years of care free enjoyment! ![]() So if you are in the market for roofing services, you may ask yourself…what should I look for to make sure I get a quality roof installation or repair? It’s a great question because there are many types of roofing and several manufacturers of them out there, but there are even more roofing companies out there that do the actual installations. So good product is important but it can't be emphazised enough how important good product knowledge and service is that really gets the job done right. Here is a sample of how important good installations are. Did you know, regardless of the product used if a shingle roof is installed just “good enough” it can last for 10 years, but if it is done “extremely well” it could last over 20 years and even more? I’m not kidding. So how can you find the long term roof team? Well, usually years in the business is one thing, but they also have to know about the manufacturers installation requirements to make warranties count because down the road a manufacturer in most cases is not responsible for the quality of the installation and they won’t stand behind it if it's installed incorrectly. Shingles are tested and there are guidelines about putting the proper number of nails in the right places, using the right types of nails and so much more. Great roofers know their stuff in this department and you don’t want to be stuck with no warranty left after a few years because your roof wasn’t installed properly! So overall, here are a few points that I think you should consider when looking for a solid roofing company to do your job. They should be: -Licensed and insured -Certified by the manufacturer -Been in business for a good length of time -Have good equipment -Able to give you references -Not obviously financially challenged, in the sense that they may not be able to finish the job or honor the labor warranty down the road -Have easy to contact access by phone and email -Be able to communicate well with you. Answer your questions and give you options. If you are looking for some advice about your own roof, I’ve been in the industry for over 15 years in the niagara region and my company Class Eh! There are lots of types of roofs and many types of roofers install them. Some fix leaks. These are the most detail-oriented, patient, and experienced roofers of all, usually because they know how to pinpoint a leak because they’ve seen a million of them. They have installation experience in all roof types. Most are experts in shingle, flat, and metal roofs, slate, cedar shakes, synthetic tile roofs, etc. Flat roofs include built-up, tar and gravel, etc., and the list goes on... A good leak repair roofer can find and fix leaks on all different roofing surfaces. So if you need a leak fixed, not just any roofer, roofing company or contractor will do. I am talking about the roof on the place you live, or maybe the one one top of the business you own, your cottage, etc... The fact of the matter is…whether your roof is residential, commercial, industrial, etc., and whether the material on top of it is asphalt shingle, cedar shake, metal, slate, tile, synthetic, or even a flat roof, there is a proper and VERY SPECIFIC way to maintain or replace it. Since a new roof is a 20+ year commitment, you might as well take your time and choose the best one for your particular building and educate yourself because there are options for every roof. Yes... you can Google your way through the internet and get some ideas but the reality is, your best bet is a real, live roof professional who can give you a proper assessment, consultation and ultimately estimate. A good roofing expert has years of experience in the industry. He can help you figure out what kind of roof or roof repair you need, which will perform and look the best, and which will last the longest. Also, he can even help you with your exterior designing….that is help you with colors that will complement your property (and there are lots of choices believe me)! Finally, I just want to say that a roofing expert is a pro, part of a reputable roofing company and has the RIGHT answers to all your roofing questions…so if you are looking at your roof right now and dealing with issues like leaks, damage, age, or maybe it just LOOKS bad (which is usually a sign of problems), get to a pro and get it done right the first time.
