So it’s raining outside. And, oh no… inside, too!

If this is normal, then you’ve missed the entire point of having a roof, and I’m thinking home ownership may not be for you, otherwise, you’ve got a leak.
Other signs of leaks are bulges or discoloration in your ceiling. That’s when water is pooling on the other side of that bulge or dark spot. No waiting around for the sunshine now. You’ve got to take immediate action. Here are some top tips:

Contain the Leak and Prevent any Further Damage
Put a bucket, trashcan, or some other container under the site of the drip or suspected leak. Note: Consider propping up a board inside the container so the drips hit the board and not the accumulated water. This will prevent that annoying dripping sound, which could lead to you punching a hole in one of your walls, which you’ll then need another contractor to fix. (If you want to punch a hole in something, hang on – we’re getting to that part.)

Now, get a Screwdriver
Yes a screwdriver and locate the center of the bulge where water is accumulating and puncture it right in the middle. Though it might seem unusual to punch a hole in your ceiling to stop a leak, the new hole will allow the water to drain smoothly and relieve pressure on the rest of your ceiling. If water accumulates and pools, the entire ceiling could collapse. The general rule with ceilings is that smaller holes are easier to fix than big ones.

Fix it Yourself — Briefly
And Then Call a Professional ASAP
The problem is identified and contained. Well done! This is normally where you call a roofing contractor. But you can just check out a few DIY videos on YouTube right?
WRONG
Unless you really know what you’re doing, this isn’t a DIY project. Given the expense and HUGE damage that could result from shoddy work get the pros in as soon as possible to access and fix the damage.

We hear a lot about solar power, global warming and the environment these days, so I thought this week i would talk a bit about solar reflective shingles.

Solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofing membranes can be an important component in a building system designed to reduce overall building energy consumption and the impact the home or building has on the environment.

Solar reflective shingles have surfaces that reflect a lot more Infrared radiation than normal roof surfaces. Infrared radiation is a spectrum of light that make roof surfaces get very hot, so solar reflective shingles are designed specifically to reduce the absorption of the suns infrared radiation by reflecting IR rays off the surface of the roof  to keep it cooler inside.

Solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofs in general have the ability to keep building interiors cooler, with the overall result being that air conditioning systems get a break and so does your wallet!

In addition to the potential energy saving benefits that solar reflective shingles can have for a building, research on the degradation of roofing membranes over a number of years have shown that heat from the sun is one of the biggest factors that affects how long your roof will last.

High temperatures and large variations; seasonally or daily, at the roofing level are dvery hard on roofing surfaces. Reducing the extremes of temperature change will reduce damage to roofing systems. Using solar reflective shingles and solar reflective roofing products that reflect ultraviolet and primarily infrared radiation will reduce damage caused by u/v and heat degradation.

Last week I talked about some of the "myths" around flat roofing in a residential situation in particular.  This week I focus on the total positives of considering one...even for a home.

So this week I thought I would talk a bit about flat roofing as a residential option because I think most people associate them only with commercial and industrial buildings.
 
I also think a lot of folks have some wrong information about them, so they don’t consider the real story when making a roof choice.  So let’s look at some common flat roof misinformation: 
 
1. Flat roofs can’t support ice and snow build up on the roof in the winter
Building codes across Ontario demand that a roof be able to bear the weight of ice and snow and qualified roofing technicians must respect the building code when installing a flat roof, so, if you’re dealing with a professional roofing contractor with professional materials, they will ensure your flat roof will be satisfactory.

2. Flat roofs are more prone to leaks than sloped roofs
Bad installation, aging and poor design are all key reasons that roofs fail. Again, expert installers and quality materials go hand in hand when choosing a flat roof to ensure your building/home is protected.
