Skylights and Your Roof - What You Need to Know!

Natural lighting is one of the most amazing features in a house isn’t it? The warmth and atmosphere it brings is so inviting and that’s why lots of folks look for options to bring more of it into their home.

One fairly popular way to do this is skylights, so I thought I would talk a bit about them this week and how they relate to your roofing.

Placement of Skylights
In the case of skylights, you will want to know where the rafters are in your home. Having a blueprint for your reference is the best way to make sure you’re not going to cause issues with installing a skylight. Once you have a good idea of where the rafters are, you can plan your placement accordingly. Start from the inside, making sure to remove all interior sheathing and marking the corners of your skylight to outline where it will be. Don’t forget to remove your shingles prior to starting to cut.
Flashing
Because there are so many kinds of flashings, you will want to know the slope of your roof before choosing the best type for your skylights. This is a very important part of installing a skylight, because the flashing will help seal your skylight and make sure water is directed away from the opening. To get the best result, waterproof your flashing and avoid any moisture issues that can easily occur after a rain or hail storm.
Safety
The most important thing to be aware of when installing a skylight, is safety. While it is possible to install one yourself, you should never do it by yourself. Make sure to have the right equipment with you, and the protective gear you need in case of a slip. Also, make sure to check what the weather may be for the following day or two. It’s possible you may run into problems once you’re up there, or it could take you longer than planned. If it does in fact rain, having moisture around during the installation process can cause big problems.
Call the Pros
As always, before starting any project on your roof, make sure you have it inspected by professional contractors. The last thing you need to find is an issue of roof damage when you go to start cutting.
For all your roofing needs my team at Class Eh! Roofing are here for you 24/7 and would welcome the opportunity to help you out.  Call us today at 289-687-6924 or email us at: classehroofing@gmail.com
