ROOFING IN COLD WEATHER

So as my first blog post about roofing, I first want to say hello and thanks for reading along!

I started Class Eh! Roofing many years ago with the goal of giving folks great roofs in Niagara at great prices, BUT I found that people don’t know a lot about roofing, even though it is something everyone needs and it can be a pretty big investment.  So with that in mind, through this weekly column I am hoping to discuss things that I think are important topics about roofing and I hope you not only enjoy them but maybe learn a little too!

So this week let’s look at roofing in cold weather…

A lot of people decide that a good time to have a new roof installed is when it is warmer ….that is the spring, summer and fall months.

But here in Niagara, we are still feeling the bite of winter and it is cold outside….so what happens to roofs installed in the less than ideal temperatures?

This is actually a question I get asked a lot by customers …especially for those that may not have a choice in the matter due to emergency situation.

So the good news is that there are actually no specific industry guidelines for temperature and roof installation for asphalt shingles (one of the most common roof applications), however, lots of manufacturers do make recommendations.

This means we can and do install roofs all year round, but as professionals we do have to pay special attention to the weather and hold off for warmer days for certain types of applications.

Things that we have to take into consideration are that certain materials change in certain temperatures. For example: although asphalt shingles do become brittle as the temperature drops, steps can be taken to reduce or eliminate them breaking.

For example, if shingles are stored in a warm place and loaded just before we install them, problems can be kept to a minimum.

Another concern I hear from people during the cool weather is whether or not the self-sealing strips will bond properly without a warm day.

It is a good question because of course, the sun is very helpful in warming a newly installed roof and aiding in a good seal, but sometimes we can use hand tabbing (or adding adhesive to the underside of shingles during the application) to help things along.  So in a nutshell, this method helps keep the shingles in place until warmer weather does come to allow the seal to set as it should.

BOTTOM LINE: Cold weather roofing is completely doable.  You just need to take the proper steps to make sure it is done right.  Whenever you decide you need your roof done, shoot us an email or give us a buzz and we will make sure you get the best result possible no matter what time of year. (Plus our Shingle Master Certified Team and warranty on all of our work will give you peace of mind).

Hope you enjoyed blog one…
